Glensaugh Site Visit

Join us on 11th November for a unique look at wildfire prevention in action

Hosted by the South Grampian Wildlife Group in Partnership with JHI Glensaugh Farm

The theme for our site visit is ‘local resilience’ and offers a unique look at the systems and equipment in place to tackle wildfire in the local environment, including demonstrations of ATV-mounted fire fogging units and the use of helicopters in firefighting.

Book your place on the site visit

The site visit is being hosted by the South Grampian Wildfire Group and the James Hutton Institute at the Glensaugh Research Farm, Fettercairn on Monday 11th November. The theme for the day is “local resilience”. The site visit booking fee is £30 and will include coach transport from/to Aberdeen to Glensaugh, lunch and refreshments. Coach spaces are limited to 50 for the site visit.

The pick-up point for the coach will be near the P&J Live conference venue at 10am, with arrival at Glensaugh 11am. The coach will depart Glensaugh at 3pm and arrive back at P&J Live at 4pm. Once at Glensaugh, there will be the chance for refreshments before delegates are split into two groups, one outside and the other inside, swapping activities after lunch.

The outside group will have a short walk through a wood to the edge of the moor for a demonstration of an ATV-mounted fire fogging unit and a helicopter using water. Warm clothes, waterproofs and boots are advised for the walk.

The second group will be inside, using the research farm seminar rooms for a series of short presentations. Topics include engagement at a local level with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) wildfire strategy, fire experiments carried out at Glensaugh, Scottish Forestry wildfire planning, fire insurance, local resilience, and the South Grampian Wildfire Group.

There will also be displays on moorland management by the Angus Glens Moorland Group and equipment used by land managers and SFRS to see during the visit.

Our thanks go to Scottish Forestry for sponsoring the site visit and to the James Hutton Institute for hosting the day.

Good to know

Please dress in weather-appropriate clothing. We expect typical weather for Aberdeen in November; cold, with a high chance of rain and wind. We would suggest a warm, waterproof coat and trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. It may also be sensible to bring spare clothes if the forecast looks inclement. Additionally, a small rucksack containing water and any medications (if applicable) is advised.

The meeting point for the coach pickup is circled on the image.
